How to dress for a newborn and family photoshoot

When Brett and Tahnee asked us to document a snippet of life with their newly arrived baby Isaac, we said, "of course"! Baby Isaac has been much anticipated- we have been waiting for him to arrive for many months and were ecstatic to spend some time with him in Brett and Tahnee's home. As you will see, he is already quite expressive and full of personality. We really enjoyed shooting and editing their photos for them. The love they, and their family, have for baby Isaac is so palpable.

Tips to consider for dressing for a shoot (when it's in your house):

- Have a look around your house and notice what colour is the dominant colour. Brett and Tahnee's house is mostly green as their living areas are filled with plants.

- Look in your wardrobe to see if there are clothes that complement that colour. Tahnee went for various greens - different tones, and patterns with green. The green also worked well against a brown couch that they had (not shown here).

- The warm earthy tones looked great against their skin. You might have an idea what looks good on your skin too

- If you want a pop of contrast, go with a contrasting colour. She chose an orange shirt for Brett to change into at one stage.

Tips for around the house:

- Note where the light tends stream in from morning to late afternoon. Consider tidying up areas of the house where the light hits. Or not, if you don't want to! Tahnee has a tendency towards orderliness-is-peacefulness so she chose to tidy up before the shoot. Others might have a boisterous personality that embraces chaos, and their photos should reflect that energy as well! We understand firsthand how hard it is to do anything more than sleep, eat, and feed the baby in those early days. Especially if you have another child or pet in the home (we have an energetic carpe-diem Staffy dog).

- It can be very nice to capture in photos the thoughtful gifts loved ones have given, or things you have collected or made for the baby in preparation for their arrival. Brett and Tahnee used their own swaddles, baby clothing, and toys. Tahnee had quilted and sewn some bedding and wall art which were captured "on (digital) film" for them. There were also some heartfelt family mementos in the nursery which we noted and got in the photos for them (e.g., a framed handwritten prayer from grandmom).

Big welcome, baby Isaac, and a big warm thank you to Brett and Tahnee for the honours and trusting us with making photographs for them!
